(DALLAS) — The first patient in the U.S. diagnosed as having contracted the ebola virus has died, Texas health officials confirmed Wednesday.

“It is with profound sadness and heartfelt disappointment that we must inform you of the death of Thomas Eric Duncan this morning at 7:51 am. Mr. Duncan succumbed to an insidious disease, Ebola,” read a statement from the health department.

The statement added that Duncan “fought courageously,” and that his doctors and nurses, “as well as the entire Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas community, are also grieving his passing.”
