OMAHA (DTN) — Corn and soybean harvest progress was lagging an average pace as of Sept. 25, according to USDA’s latest Crop Progress report released Monday. Corn harvest is 4 percentage points behind the five-year average and soybean harvest is 3 percentage points behind.
The nation’s corn crop is 97% dented and 73% mature, compared to 93% and 53% last week, 96% and 66% last year, and five-year averages of 96% and 64%. Corn condition held steady at 74% good to excellent.
“USDA said 74% of the corn crop was rated good to excellent, resulting in the same DTN Corn Condition Index of 178 as a week ago,” said DTN Analyst Todd Hultman. “USDA’s report is neutral for corn.”
Sixty-eight percent of the nation’s soybeans were dropping leaves, compared to 46% last week, 69% last year and a 64% average. Soybean condition remained steady at 73% good to excellent.
“USDA said that 73% of soybeans were rated good to excellent, resulting in the same DTN Soybean Condition Index of 176 as a week ago,” Hultman said. “Monday’s report is neutral for soybeans.”
Winter wheat planting is 30% complete, compared to 17% last week, 28% last year and a 30% average. Winter wheat is 8% emerged, compared to 6% last year and an 8% average. “Monday’s planting pace is neutral for winter wheat prices,” Hultman said.
Sixty-three percent of cotton had bolls opening, compared to 48% last week, 66% last year and a 65% average. Cotton harvested was reported at 10%, compared to 6% last week, 10% last year and a 10% average.
Cotton condition held steady at 48% good to excellent.
Seventy-three percent of the rice crop was harvested, compared to 64% last week, 65% last year and a 59% average.
Sorghum was 94% coloring, compared to 88% last week, 94% last year and an 87% average. Sorghum harvest was 34% complete, compared to 29% last week, 35% last year and a 32% average. Sorghum condition held steady at 66% good to excellent.

Winter wheat planted was 72 percent, ahead of 63 last year and 61 average. Emerged was 42 percent, well ahead of 20 last year and 21 average.
Alfalfa fourth cutting was 71 percent, behind 87 last year and 78 average.
Dry edible beans condition rated 0 percent very poor, 3 poor, 33 fair, 55 good, and 9 excellent. Dry edible beans dropping leaves was 95 percent, equal to last year, and near 93 average. Harvested was 51 percent, behind 62 last year, and near 55 average.
Proso millet harvested was 57 percent, well behind 82 last year, and behind 65 average.
Livestock, Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range conditions rated 3 percent very poor, 8 poor, 25 fair, 56 good, and 8 excellent.
Stock water supplies rated 1 percent very short, 10 short, 88 adequate, and 1 surplus.
Field Crops Report: Winter wheat planted was 20 percent, equal to last year, and near the five-year average of 22. Emerged was 3 percent, equal to last year, and near 5 average.
Corn condition rated 2 percent very poor, 7 poor, 26 fair, 54 good, and 11 excellent. Corn mature was 81 percent, equal to last year, and near 79 average. Harvested was 29 percent, behind 38 last year and 40 average.
Soybean condition rated 1 percent very poor, 4 poor, 24 fair, 56 good, and 15 excellent. Soybeans dropping leaves was 34 percent, behind 45 last year and 48 average. Harvested was 2 percent, near 4 both last year and average.
Sorghum condition rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 21 fair, 59 good, and 16 excellent. Sorghum coloring was 96 percent, near 95 last year, and ahead of 85 average. Mature was 46 percent, behind 52 last year, but ahead of 32 average. Harvested was 10 percent, near 13 last year and 6 average.
Cotton condition rated 1 percent very poor, 2 poor, 29 fair, 64 good, and 4 excellent. Cotton setting bolls was 94 percent, behind 99 last year, and near 98 average. Bolls opening was 39 percent, near 36 last year and 43 average. Harvested was 3 percent, equal to last year, and near 1 average.
Sunflower condition rated 1 percent very poor, 3 poor, 28 fair, 63 good, and 5 excellent. Sunflowers ray flowers dried was 77 percent, near 75 last year and 81 average. Bracts turning yellow was 55 percent, well ahead of 33 last year, but near 59 average. Bracts turning brown was 23 percent.
Alfalfa hay fourth cutting was 81 percent complete, near 78 last year, and well ahead of 61 average.
