Pirates knocked off in first round

Elwood lost in its first trip to the state basketball tournament since 1990 as the Pirates fell to top seeded Spalding/Spalding Academy 76-48 in the Class D2 state quarterfinals on Thursday night. The Knights jumped out to 15-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter, and were up big 41-22 at the half and never looked back. Brandon Stevens led the Knights with 16 points. Skyler Werger paced Elwood with 20 points. The Pirates finish the year at 14-11. Spalding/Spalding Academy is now 24-3 on the year and will play in the Class D2 state semifinals.
