Nebraska State Fair launches campaign

The Nebraska State Fair has announced the launching of the State Fair Cares campaign to assist non-profits throughout the state.

Executive Director Joseph McDermott says this program has been around for a few years.

"Well the State Fair Cares program was actually introduced in 2011 when the Nebraska State Fair developed a recycling program. In 2013, on Labor Day, we conducted a food drive where over 13,000 pounds of food was donated, and provided to food banks across the state."

The program is designed to benefit bona fide non-profit organizations in Nebraska by allowing them premium access to Nebraska State Fair visitors for solicitation of funds, item collection, or program awareness.

McDermott says non-profits can apply online.

"We're looking for non-profits across the state to go to our website, and the rules for the program and an application are on our website. They would fill out the application, which basically identifies what they would do at the Nebraska State Fair to get their message out about their mission statement, or perhaps they're going to collect food or clothing items."

After the application is filled out, the Nebraska State Fair Board and Staff will identify five non-profits who will then be passed on to a statewide committee to be widdled down to 2. The two non-profits selected will be given premium access to fairgoers.

The deadline for entries is May 30th at 5:00 p.m.

McDermott says the fair will make a matching contribution to the two non-profits selected.

"The first place selection will receive up to a matching $10,000 contribution from the Nebraska State Fair. So for example, if the non-profit raises $15,000 as a result of their exhibit at the state fair, then the state fair would contribute an additional $10,000. And the non-profit that comes in as the second choice, the Nebraska State Fair would match up to $5,000 of what they raise."

One non-profit will be at the fair opening weekend. The other will be there the second weekend.
