22nd ranked Huskers complete sweep of Shockers
Wichita, Kan. - Junior right-hander Tatum Edwards fired a one-hit shutout and the 22nd-ranked Nebraska softball team hit three home runs to complete a doubleheader sweep of Wichita State with a 9-0 five-inning victory in game two.
The win was Nebraska's fifth straight, with all five wins coming during a school-record eight-game road trip. The Huskers improved to 16-5 with the victory, while sweeping their second straight doubleheader.
Nebraska pounded out 14 hits in the victory, including the three home runs. Hitting solo home runs were freshmen Alicia Armstrong and Dawna Tyson, along with junior Taylor Edwards. Tyson homered for her third straight game, while Edwards hit a home run in her second straight game. Overall, the Huskers homered five times in Saturday's doubleheader, after hitting five times in a doubleheader at Oklahoma State last Sunday.
Armstrong finished a triple shy of the cycle, going 3-for-3 with a double, a homer, two runs scored and one RBI. Tyson was also perfect at the plate, finishing 2-for-2 with a homer, a hit-by-pitch and a career-high-tying three RBIs. Senior Gabby Banda went 3-for-3 with a season-high three RBIs, while Taylor Edwards and sophomore Mattie Fowler also had two hits apiece.
In the circle, Tatum Edwards improved to 9-4 on the year by tossing her team-leading fourth shutout. Edwards allowed only a first-inning double and a second-inning hit batter, retiring the final 10 batters she faced. Edwards also struck out seven.
Sloan Anderson (6-4) took the loss for Wichita State (9-11), allowing four runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings.
The win gave Nebraska a series sweep, as Sunday's scheduled game was cancelled due to forecasted wind chills in the 20s.
After a scoreless first two innings, Armstrong gave Nebraska a 1-0 lead when she led off the top of the third inning with a towering home run to left field. Banda and Taylor Edwards followed with back-to-back singles, before Tatum Edwards brought Banda home with a two-out, RBI single that gave the Huskers a 2-0 lead.
Tyson made it 3-0 with an impressive lead off home run of her own in the top of the fourth. Armstrong then reached on a one-out bloop double before moving to third on a bunt from classmate Kiki Stokes. Armstrong came home on a clutch two-out RBI single from Banda, giving the Huskers a 4-0 lead and marking the end of the night for Anderson.
The Huskers blew the game open with five runs in the top of the fifth. Taylor Edwards began the frame with a solo home run, her second of the day after also homering in game one. Senior Brooke Thomason followed with a single before a Wichita State error put Huskers on first and second with no outs. Fowler loaded the bases with a single before Tyson drove in a pair of runs with a two-run single.
Leading 7-0, Armstrong loaded the bases again with a one-out single, before Banda brought the run rule into effect with a two-out, two-run single to left.
Tatum Edwards then retired the side in order in the fifth, striking out two more Shockers
