Beef: Locally Grown in Nebraska
One in five steaks in America comes from Nebraska, but what does the consumer know about how protein source gets to the grocery store? In western Nebraska all you have to do is look at the countryside to see how the process starts with a cattleherd.
KNEB/Rural Radio Network interviewed Jeff Heldt, General Manager for the Silver Spur Ranches of Minatare. Their ranches raises 900 Red Angus and Charolais mama cows. At weaning time, they evaluate their herd and decide which calves stay in the herd to replace older bulls or females, while others will be sent on to the feedlot.
While living in the feedlot calves eat feed that is grown on their farm like corn silage and alfalfa hay, while the wet distillers grain comes from the nearby Bridgeport Ethanol Plant and corn and other feed items are bought from farmers nearby.
The Silver Spur Ranch is also enrolled in several certification programs. Heldt says their cattle are audited by a third party that evaluate their management practices for feeding medication, as well as animal welfare.
So as you enjoy hamburger or a juicy steak - know that there is a lot care and attention into the beef that you feed your family.
