NFU Opposes Proposed Beef Merger

Food processing company JBS USA proposed the acquisition of two U.S.-based beef packing plants owned by Canadian-based XL Four Star Beef.

The National Farmers Union believes this proposed merger would reduce competition and harm cattle producers and consumers. NFU - along with more than 40 farming, rural and ag organizations - sent a letter to the Department of Justice requesting no early termination of the antritrust evaluation established in 2008 regarding the acquisition be granted.

NFU also requests the Justice Department make a second request for information to extend the investigation.
