Judicious Use of Antibiotics Encouraged by NFU

Unless valid scientific evidence proves the product is unsafe - National Farmers Union supports measures that continue to allow the Food and Drug Administration to permit the use of therapeutic antibiotics approved for use in livestock. That's according to NFU Vice President of Government Relations Chandler Goule. Goule says NFU believes antibiotic treatment should be reserved for clinical treatment of illness and for judicious use in preventing illness during periods of stress. The group supports producer rights to treat animals with antibiotics to address herd health issues - but opposes the constant sub-therapeutic use of antibiotics. According to Goule - more research is needed to determine the links between antibiotic use for animal health and antibiotic resistance in humans. He says there is also need for carefully crafted legislation that is evidence-based.
