NFU President Reminds Congress of Looming Farm Bill Deadline
National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson is re-emphasizing the importance of signing a five-year, comprehensive farm bill into law before the current law expires on September 30th. Johnson sent a letter to Senate and House Agriculture Committee leaders to stress the importance of appointing a full farm bill conference committee as soon as possible so members can begin work on a compromise in time for final passage by both legislative bodies and the president's signature. With only nine legislative days in the month of September - Johnson urges House leadership to name its conference committee members as soon as possible. He says America's family farmers, ranchers and hungry families can't afford the uncertainty that currently exists due to a lack of Congressional action. Johnson also highlights NFU's farm bill priorities - including a strong safety net in times of market collapse or natural disaster, mandatory funding for energy title programs, support for fair and competitive markets, conservation compliance, permanent farm bill law, funding for beginning farmer programs and inclusion of a nutrition title.
