Midwestern Governors Urge Officials to Reconsider RFS Reductions
Midwestern members of the Governors' Biofuels Coalition have sent letters to President Barack Obama, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Gina McCarthy and Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack expressing support for the Renewable Fuel Standard in response to the EPA's proposed reductions for 2014.
The letters reference an Iowa State University estimate that corn prices could drop 19-cents per bushel based on the proposed rule and bring corn prices below the cost of production for producers. The proposed rule also could cause a ripple effect on agribusiness, rural communities and the U.S. economy - according to the governors.
The governors urge President Obama to encourage the EPA to increase the biodiesel volume to reflect current production levels, modify the cellulosic target to match production expectations and reinstate the statutory conventional renewable fuel target since there is no domestic supply shortage.
