Sugar policy unchanged in 2012 Farm Bill
Sugar beet growers continue to closely watch the 2012 Farm Bill. American Sugar Beet Growers Association Executive Vice President Luther Markwart says policy makers will simply roll the current policy forward that has been in place for the last four years will move forward without any changes in the 2012 Farm Bill.
Drafting of the 2012 Farm Bill is beginning in the Senate. Because of the difficulty the Senate has had in getting bills passed, Markwart says the House will be watching the Senate closely.
Earlier this year sugar beet growers made nearly 300 visits to members of the House and Senate. During a farm bill year, Markwart says it's especially important that sugar beet growers will continue to educate members of Congress on the importance of nation's sugar beet industry. The US sugar beet industry contributes 142 thousand jobs and 20 billion dollars annually to the nation's economy.
