Canadian Ag Minister States Importance of Science-Based Trade
Canada's Agriculture Minister told more than 100 U.S. Grains Council delegates this week that Canada and the U.S. must avoid a thickening at the border if open, cross-border trade is to continue between the two nations. According to Ritz - no one can afford a thickening at the border at this stage of the economic recovery. He said unscientific measures that unnecessarily restrict trade must be rooted out. Stating the importance of basing the Canadian-U.S. trade relationship on science - he cited continued support of mandatory country-of-origin labeling as a political hurdle.
