Grace Elaine Vinzant, 89, of Bertrand passed away on October 9th

Funeral Services for Grace E. Vinzant will be conducted from St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bertrand, Nebraska on Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Glenn Frecks officiating. Interment will in the Highland Cemetery at Bertrand.
Grace Elaine Vinzant, 89 years of Bertrand, passed away on October 9, 2011 at the Bertrand Nursing Home. Grace was born April 10, 1922, in Phelps County on the family farm southeast of Bertrand, the second of three children born to David and Viola (Edlund) Griffith. She was christened at the Urbana Congregational Church southeast of Bertrand on June 1, 1923.
She received her primary education from District #43, later attending school in Loomis and finishing her junior and senior years at Bertrand High School. She graduated with the class of 1939, where she took Normal Training to be a teacher. Following graduation, Grace pursued her teaching certificate at Kearney State College at Kearney, Nebraska. She taught for six years in rural Phelps and Gosper county schools.
In 1945, she was confirmed, baptized and became a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She was an active member, teaching Sunday school, vacation Bible school and other activities of the church. On March 18, 1945 she was united in marriage to Gaillan Vinzant and they made their home on a farm north of Bertrand. They were blessed with three children: LaDonna, Randall and Paul.
On March 4, 1984, her husband Gaillan passed away. On November 4, 1984 she moved into Bertrand and worked in the Bertrand School Cafeteria for 14 years. In the summers she took several classes in Food Service Training at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. She received her certificate to be a Food Service Manager or Supervisor. She enjoyed her work, especially seeing the children and school activities.
In 2001, Grace became a member of Faith Free Lutheran Church. She continued to be active in her church, with Wednesday School, Vacation Bible School, Bible studies, and other activities. She continued teaching the children until three years ago. She loved children so much, and wanted them to know Christ as their Lord and Savior.
Her family and grandchildren were very special to her. Grace was always ready to lend a helping hand. She enjoyed helping Gaillan on the farm, working in her yard, doing crafts, sewing, teaching children and volunteering and visiting with the residents at the Bertrand Nursing Home.
Besides her husband, Grace was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Claude and Spencer Griffith; one granddaughter, Yvonne Bennett; two brothers-in-law, Gaylord and George Vinzant and one sister-in-law, Alvina Vinzant.
Survivors include her daughter, LaDonna Bennett and her husband, James of Bertrand; two sons: Randall Vinzant and his wife, Vicki of Elwood, Nebraska and Paul Vinzant and his wife, Karen of Meeker, Colorado; seven grandchildren: Michelle Buckler and her husband, Seth, Diane Bennett, Brett Vinzant, Jeff Vinzant and his wife, Melissa, Josh Vinzant and his wife, Lori, Shawn Luke and his wife, Kathern, and Sy Luke; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; sisters-in-law: Irene Griffith, Geraldine Vinzant and Betty Meyer all of Bertrand; five grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Sandstrom Funeral Home in Bertrand, on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. -7:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established in her memory and will be designated at a later date.
