James Glen "Jim" Johnson, 55, of Bertrand, passed away on Tuesday
Funeral Services for James G. "Jim" Johnson will be conducted from the Hope Lutheran Church of rural Smithfield, Nebraska on Friday, October 21, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. with Pastor Doug Reed officiating. Following the traditional funeral the family will honor Jim's wish for cremation and a private family inurnment with military honors will be in the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell, Nebraska.
James Glen "Jim" Johnson, 55 years of age, of Bertrand, passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at his home in Bertrand following a brief battle with cancer. Jim was born on September 11, 1956 in Holdrege, Nebraska, the second of four children born to Charles and Amanda (Landgren) Johnson. Jim received his education from Bertrand Community School, where he graduated with the class of 1974.
Following his education, he was inducted into the United States Army on July 25, 1974 and served his country until his honorable discharge on July 24, 1977. Following his service, Jim was employed by several businesses until pursuing a career as a Master Electrician. Jim owned and operated Jim's Hometown Electric in Bertrand until his passing.
On December 4, 1981 he was united in marriage to Lynette Gerdes and the couple were blessed with two sons: Josh and Jacob. The family made their home in Holdrege for several years, before Jim returned home to Bertrand. Later in years he met Tami Myers and they were married on July 10, 2010.
Jim was active in the community, served on the Village Board, member of the Bertrand Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club and enjoyed his involvement with the Bertrand Fire and Rescue, where he served as an EMT. Jim loved hunting, fishing and camping and always put the needs of others, before his own.
He was preceded in death by parents and several aunts and uncles.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Tami Johnson of Bertrand; two sons: Josh Johnson and his wife, Brenda of Denver, Colorado and Jake Johnson and his wife, Meagan of Omaha, Nebraska; one granddaughter, Aubrey; three step-children: Erin Jensen and her husband, Brad of Holdrege, Tana Tallon and his wife, Stacia of Rapid City, South Dakota and Shawn Tallon and his fiancĂ©, Alicia Bahm of Kearney, Nebraska; six step-grandchildren: Kaylee, Ashlyn and Jymmie Jensen and Taylor, Brody, and Madelyn Tallon; one sister, Kay Christensen and her husband, Kevin of Holdrege; two brothers: Joe Johnson and his wife, Jan and Jerry Johnson and his wife, Brenda all of Bertrand; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Terry and Arleva "Fredi" Eichelberger of Oconto, Nebraska; sister-in-law, Julie Eichelberger of Broken Bow, Nebraska; one aunt, Verla Johnson of David City, Nebraska and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Sandstrom Funeral Home in Bertrand.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial will be established in Jim's memory to support the community efforts of Bertrand.
