Barbara Jean (Rogers) Johnson, 89 years of age, of Alma
Memorial Services for Barbara J. Johnson will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Christian Church in Alma, Nebraska with Pastor Larry Doubet officiating. Private family inurnment will be held at the Alma Cemetery prior to the services.
Barbara Jean (Rogers) Johnson, 89 years of age, of Alma, passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege, Nebraska. She was born on September 2, 1924 at Ragan, Nebraska, delivered by her grandfather, Dr. Daniel Rogers. She was the third child born to Tom and Jean (McKee) Rogers.
She attended school at Ragan and Alma, graduating from Alma High School with the class of 1941. Barb then graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1945 with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Dietetics. She was employed as a consulting dietitian at several hospitals and nursing homes and worked at Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege for 25 years.
On July 5, 1946, Barb was united in marriage to Gaylord L. Johnson at the First Christian Church in Alma and to this union three children were born: Tom, Roger and Julie.
Barb was a life-long member of the Christian Church in Alma, a 70 year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapter BJ in Alma, member of the Delta-Delta-Delta Sorority, the Alma Library Board and Community Concert Board in Holdrege. She was an avid reader, loved to golf, play bridge and be with her family.
Barb and Gaylord loved traveling and enjoyed their many winters spent in Green Valley, Arizona. On February 18, 2006, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gaylord. Since 2012, Barb began to make her home at Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege.
Besides her parents and husband, Gaylord, she was preceded in death by her two brothers: Daniel R. Rogers and Dr. Everette M. Rogers.
Survivors include her two sons: Tom Johnson and his wife, Debra of Winona Lake, Indiana; Roger Johnson and his wife, Rhonda of Holdrege; one daughter, Julie Howard and her husband, Rusty of Boulder, Colorado; seven grandchildren: Clint Johnson and Emily Johnson of Winona Lake, Indiana, Adam Johnson and his wife, Beth of Arlington, Virginia, Amy (Johnson) Haines and her husband, Kyler of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, Leslie Johnson of Highlands Ranch, and Lauren Howard and McKenna Howard of Boulder; one great-grandson, Jace Thomas Haines of Highlands Ranch; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Memorial book signing will be held on Friday, April 25, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Alma.
A memorial has been established in Barb's honor and kindly suggested to the First Christian Church of Alma or the Harlan County Hospital in Alma.
