Edgar William "Bill" McElvain, 91 years of age, of Holdrege, Nebraska

Memorial Services for Edgar William "Bill" McElvain will be held on Monday, May 6, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Holdrege, Nebraska with Pastor Gene Layne and Chaplain DeWane Dow officiating. Military honors will be provided at the church by the United States Navy Military Honors Team. A private family inurnment will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege at a later date.

Edgar William "Bill" McElvain, 91 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2013 at the Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege. Bill was born December 12, 1921 at Wilcox, Nebraska, the eldest of four children born to Nicholas E. and Tressa (Overholser) McElvain. He received his primary education from a District School north of Funk, Nebraska in rural Phelps County and then graduated from Wilcox High School with the class of 1940.

Following his education, Bill was inducted into the United States Navy on September 15, 1942, where he served his country during WW II, stationed in the South Pacific until his honorable discharge on January 19, 1946. When Bill returned to the states, he engaged in farming west of Loomis.

He was united in marriage to Carolyn Lucille Johnson on March 17, 1948 at Carolyn's parents' home east of Loomis. The couple were blessed with six children: Nick, Dan, Tom, Dick, Peg, and Patty. The family made their home on the family farm northeast of Holdrege. Besides farming, Bill also provided repair work on pivots for Quinten Peterson and several area neighbors. Following his retirement, Bill rented the ground to Soneson Farms, and continued to assist on the farm for several years. In 2004 the couple moved to Kearney until returning to Holdrege in July of 2012.

Bill was a member of the Emmaus Evangelical Free Church, north of Funk, and most recently enjoyed chapel services at Christian Homes Care Community. He was also a member of the Martin-Horn American Legion Post #66 and the V.F.W. of Holdrege, he was also a member of the Civil Air Patrol, longtime member of the N.R.A. and was a member of Grange for several years. Bill was an avid bowler, but most importantly, he loved spending time with his family and friends.

Besides his parents; he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert McElvain and his wife, Inez; and five brothers-in-law: Cecil Stevenson, Roy Pearson, Ralph Johnson and his wife, Mary, Roger Johnson, and Royce Johnson and sister-in-law, Rachel Miserintino and her husband, Joe.

He leaves to mourn his passing; his wife of 65 years, Carolyn of Holdrege; four sons: Nick McElvain and his wife, Connie of Lincoln, Nebraska, Dan McElvain and his wife, Susie of Kearney, Tom McElvain and his wife, Jackie of Redding, California, and Dick McElvain and his wife, Donna of Lincoln; two daughters: Peg Johnston and her husband, Don of Kearney and Patty Sullivan and her husband, Dave of Fruita, Colorado; seventeen grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; two sisters: Mary Pearson of Holdrege and Margaret Dyer and her husband, Daryl of Grinnell, Iowa; sister-in-law, Dorothy Johnson of Holdrege; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorial Book Signing will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2013 from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.

A memorial has been established in Bill's honor and kindly suggested to the Christian Homes Care Community.
