Youth recovering after Lodgepole train accident

A 17-year-old boy hit by a train in Lodgepole Tuesday afternoon is recovering at Regional West Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries according to family members.

Cheyenne County Sheriff John Jenson says the juvenile, who Jenson did not identify, was crossing the track from the south, but not at a crosswalk. Jensen says the boy had his earbuds in and was unable to hear the blowing of the trains whistle. Jenson says the family provided the update in the youth's condition to his office.

The accident happened around 3:30 p.m. An ambulance was called to the scene and the victim was reportedly conscious and breathing and airlifted to the hospital.

Members of the Lodgepole Fire Department and Emergency Response Care responded to the incident. Union Pacific is assisting the Sheriff's office with the investigation.
