Anthony Terrence "Tony" Shield, 36 years of age, of Axtell, Nebraska (formerly of Holdrege)

Funeral Services for Tony Shield will be conducted from the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Dale Lambert and Reverend Darrel Wissmann officiating. Following the traditional funeral, cremation will take place and a private family inurnment will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege at a later date.

Anthony Terrence "Tony" Shield, 36 years of age, of Axtell, Nebraska (formerly of Holdrege) passed away on Friday, February 8, 2013 at his home in Axtell. Tony was born December 16, 1976 at Holdrege, the eldest of two sons born to Don and Judy (Eckwall) Shield. He was baptized and confirmed at the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege. He received his education from Holdrege Public Schools, graduating from Holdrege High School with the class of 1996. During his high school years, Tony was a four sport athlete in Football, Basketball, Golf and Baseball. He was also a member of the 1993 State Championship Golf Team. Following his high school career he was chosen to play in the East-West All Star Football Game in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, where he was honored with the Offensive Player of the Game. He then pursued higher education at Doane College, where he participated in Football and Baseball and majored in Biology.

During his freshman year in college, Tony was blessed by the birth of a son, Preston. While at Doane College, he met Crystal Lynn Keas and the couple were united in marriage on June 1, 2002. To this union two children were born: Xander Dominick and Natalie Marie. The couple made their home in Holdrege until 2005, when they moved to Axtell. Following his education, Tony began his employment with Green Landscapes in Holdrege.

At a young age, Tony had a constant interest to be side-by-side with his Dad working for Care Cleaning, Carpet and Satellite. He was proud to continue the family business taking over as owner/operator.

He loved refereeing football, basketball, playing softball, coaching his sons: Preston and Xander's sporting activities. Recently, Tony also loved the opportunity to be able to accompany his daughter, Natalie to a Father/Daughter Snowflake Dance. Tony also enjoyed hunting, loved being on the Lake in his boat, golfing and loved Husker Football, yet was defined by being an avid Duke Basketball Fan. After marriage, Tony became a member of the Fridhem Lutheran Church in Funk, Nebraska, where he previously served on the church board. He was also a 3rd generation member of the Jauken Lodge #146 of Holdrege, where he was a former Master Mason.

Tony was preceded in death by his grandparents: Dayle and Phyllis Eckwall and Eldon and Rose Shield.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Crystal of Axtell; two sons: Preston of Holdrege and Xander of Axtell; one daughter, Natalie of Axtell; parents: Don and Judy Shield of Holdrege; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Galen and Lois Keas of Alda, Nebraska; brother, Chip Shield of Lincoln, Nebraska; three sisters-in-law: Laura Kerkman and her husband, Jared of Palmyra, Nebraska, Kelly Lahm and her husband, Mitchel of Grand Island, Nebraska, and Sarah Halkyard and her husband, Ben of Axtell; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege from 5:00 p.m. -8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

A memorial has been established in Tony's honor and kindly suggested to the family for support of his children's education.
