Gordon Irving Byler, 92 years of age, of Alma

Funeral Services for Gordon I. Byler will be conducted from the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Alma, Nebraska on Friday, July 19, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Linda Knipping-Potts officiating. Interment will be in the Alma Cemetery.

Gordon Irving Byler, 92 years of age, of Alma, passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at the Harlan County Health Systems in Alma. Gordon was born January 14, 1921 on the family farm near Alma in Harlan County, Nebraska, the second of four children born to Irving and Edna (Goodrich) Byler. Gordon received his education from Alma Public Schools, graduating from Alma High School with class of 1938. Following his education, Gordon engaged in his lifelong career of farming, which was his true passion in life.

On September 20, 1941, he was united in marriage to Edith Evon Artz at the Jewell County Court House in Mankato, Kansas by Judge Kissinger. They made their home on a farm southwest of Huntley, Nebraska in the Washington Township, where they resided until moving to their new home east of Alma in 1980. The Byler's also maintained a home in Alma from 1966 until 1980. Edith passed away on July 17, 2005.

Gordon enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing. He also enjoyed planting a variety of trees that he loved tending to on his farm. Gordon participated in trap shooting for many years, which many friendship bonds were formed during this period of time in his life. His community of Alma was always important to Gordon, and giving of his labors was always at the forefront of his mind.

Besides his parents and wife, Edie; Gordon was preceded in death by two brothers: Vernon Wayne Byler and his wife, Berneice and Joe Byler and his wife, Ruth; sisters-in-law: Alice Evelyn Artz in infancy and Hazel Bennett and her husband, Harold; brothers-in-law: Delmar "Pete" Artz, Willard Artz, Chester Artz and his wife, Doris, George Artz and his wife, Reta, Lewis Artz, and Bennie Joe Sindt.

He leaves to mourn his passing; one sister, Betty Gardiner of Homeland, California; sister-in-laws: Della Sindt of Holdrege, Barbara Artz of Minden, Nebraska, Lela Dier and her husband, John of Holdrege, Tillie Artz of Lincoln, Nebraska; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 18, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Alma.

A memorial has been established in Gordon's honor and kindly suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
