Johanns: C.R. contains funding for meat inspectors
Nebraska Senator Mike Johanns says a continuing resolution passed by the Senate Wednesday includes money for meat inspectors at processing facilities.
Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack's recommended cuts from the sequester included furloughing the inspectors, but Johanns says he and other rural senators were able to adjust USDA's budget so the crucial meat inspectors remain on the job. Johanns said it was "simple and straight forward", and he questioned again why Vilsack said his hands "were tied" when it came to the furloughs.
Johanns says the House passed similar legislation early Thursday so the issue with the meat inspectors appears to be resolved.
