Melvin Ray Davison, 81 years of age, of Bertrand, Nebraska

Memorial Services for Melvin R. Davison will be held on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church of rural Smithfield, Nebraska with Pastor Tim Glendening officiating. Private Family Interment will be held in the Hope Lutheran Cemetery in Gosper County, Nebraska prior to the service.

Melvin Ray Davison, 81 years of age, of Bertrand, Nebraska, passed away at the Bertrand Nursing Home on Friday, August 30, 2013. Mel was born December 1, 1931 at Stafford, Kansas. He was a twin and the youngest of three sons born to Ray Hugh and Verna Evelyn (Farmer) Davison. He began his education in Kansas until his family moved to Bertrand when Mel was in fourth grade. He then attended Bertrand Community Schools, graduating from Bertrand High School with the class of 1949.

On June 12, 1949, he was united in marriage to Marilyn F. Wortman at the Hope Lutheran Church and to this union two sons were born: Mark Alan and Mitchell Craig. The family made their home on farmsteads north of Bertrand, where Mel engaged in farming until 1978. He also worked for Bennett Construction from 1976 until his retirement in 1991.

Mel was a member of the Hope Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed on August 22, 1949 by Pastor Lewis Holm, he also served on the church council, served as the Sunday School Superintendent and sang in the choir. Mel was also a past member of the Lion’s Club of Bertrand.

Baseball was his passion; Mel enjoyed playing baseball and softball through the years, beginning with his father and then his two sons. Mel also enjoyed umpiring ball games, was a talented woodworker, and he especially enjoyed creating many birdhouses.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law: George and Laura Wortman; and a nephew, Steve Davison.

Mel leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 64 years, Marilyn Davison of Bertrand; two sons: Mark Davison and his wife, Lola of Smithfield and Mitch Davison of Lincoln, Nebraska; seven grandchildren: Chris Davison and his wife, Christina of Kearney, Nebraska, Tyson Davison and his wife, Lindsay of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Danielle Davison of Lincoln, Susan Schutz of Ft. Worth, Texas, Sally Loisel and her husband, Eric of Ft. Worth, Jason Coffman of Lake Tahoe, California, and Jeremy Coffman of Omaha, Nebraska; four great-grandchildren: Tristen Davison, Noah and Keira Loisel, and Behlen Coffman; two brothers: Donald Davison and his wife, Leona of Hillsboro, Oregon and Mel’s twin brother, Marvin Davison and his wife, Donna of Torrence, California; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family is honoring Mel’s wish for a private family visitation.
