Laura was the third of four children and was preceded in death by her parents and three siblings Gladys Howard, Eva Canida Wallace and Jack Hammond. Laura was raised on her parents homestead in the southwest comer of Hooker County and walked one-half mile each way to school through the 8th glade before attending Mullen High School.

For many years Laura raised a huge garden and many chickens. She loved finding sand cherries on the hillside and her jelly was a gift to her friends, family and grandchildren many times over. Laura's greatest love was her family, the ranch and her cows. She was known for her good cooking, especially her fresh bread, caramel rolls, potatoes, fried chicken and rare roast beef.
