Leland Arthur Wasenius, 83 years of age, of Grand Island, Nebraska (formerly of Holdrege)

Memorial Services for Leland A. Wasenius will be held at the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. with Reverend Kenton Birtell officiating. Private family inurnment will be held at the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege, prior to the services at the church.

Leland Arthur Wasenius, 83 years of age, of Grand Island, Nebraska (formerly of Holdrege) passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at the Grand Island Veterans Home. Leland was born October 27, 1930 on the family farm, southwest of Stamford in Furnas County, Nebraska, one of three children born to Arthur E. and Beulah B. (Noren) Wasenius. He received his education from Stamford, graduating from Stamford High School with the class of 1948.

Following his education, Leland was inducted into the United States Marines Corps, serving his country during the Korean War from March 27, 1952 until his honorable discharge on March 27, 1954. He then continued to serve in a reserve capacity for six years.

After his service, Leland returned home to the family farm, where he engaged in farming with his father. On February 7, 1961, Leland was united in marriage to Darlene Mable Stutheit and the couple made their home in Axtell, Nebraska. While in Axtell, Leland was employed by Bethphage Mission for fifteen years as a nursing assistant. They then moved to Holdrege, where he continued working as a nursing assistant at Holdrege Memorial Homes until his retirement at the age of 62. On May 10, 2001, Leland was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene. In August of 2010, he began to make his home at the Grand Island Veterans Home.

Leland was an active member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege, past member of the American Legion and enjoyed visiting with friends while he attended many auctions. Leland was a kind, sincere person who will be missed by all who knew him.

Besides his parents and his wife, Darlene; Leland was preceded in death by his sister, Pauline Percival; brother, Victor Wasenius; and sister-in-law, Margaret Stutheit. Leland is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

There will be no visitation; the family is honoring Leland's wish for cremation.
