James Owen "Jim" Jones, 84 years of age, of Holdrege, Nebraska

A Celebration of Life Service for James O. "Jim" Jones will be conducted from the First Presbyterian Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. with Reverend Dr. W. Kirwin Stewart Jr., officiating. Private family inurnment will be held at the Minden Cemetery prior to the services with military honors provided by the Minden American Legion Post # 94 in conjunction with the United States Air Force Military Honors Team.

James Owen "Jim" Jones, 84 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, June 14, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska. Jim was born May 1, 1929 at Minden, Nebraska, the third of five children born to Harold and Maude (Crabtree) Jones. He was baptized and confirmed from the Christian Church in Minden. Jim received his education from Minden Public Schools, graduating from Minden High School with the class of 1949. Following his education, he was inducted into the United States Air Force on September 26, 1950 and served with the 3380th Air Police Squadron until his honorable discharge on November 5, 1953 as a Staff Sergeant.

Following his service to his country, Jim continued a career with Southern Public Power District in Grand Island, Minden and later Holdrege as a lineman and later became involved with Management until his retirement in 1991. He was united in marriage to Maxine L. Shannon on December 27, 1950 at Minden and to this union four sons were born: Michael, Mark, Dan and Steve. Following his retirement, Jim enjoyed his time with family, golfing with friends, traveling, especially wintering in Pharr, Texas.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Holdrege, where he served as an Elder and Choir Director for several years, member of the Holdrege Country Club, and past member of the Elks Lodge.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark in infancy; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Hubert and Anna Shannon; a great-grandson, Jace Ryan Jones; two sisters: Eula Dunlap and her husband, Earl and Catherine Maxon; one brother, Willis Jones and his wife, Marian; and brother-in-law, Marvin Deisley.

He leaves to mourn his passing; his wife, Maxine of 62 years of Holdrege; three sons: Michael Jones of Holdrege, Dan Jones and his wife, Mary Jo of Holdrege; and Steve Jones and his wife, Sherry of Grand Island; eight grandchildren: Jeremy Jones and his wife, Jody, Josh Jones and his wife, Tori, Sara Hammond and her husband, Arik, Amy Peterson and her husband, Chris, Paul Svoboda and his wife, Theresa, Susie Jones, Kip Jones, and Chelsea Schweizer and her husband, Kiel; twelve great-grandchildren; one sister, LuEllen Jones of Holdrege; sister-in-law, Eleanor Deisley of Gibbon, Nebraska; brothers-in-law: Wesley Shannon and his wife, Marcia of Minden and Kenneth Maxon of Washington State; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorial Book Signing will be held on Monday, June 17, 2013 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.

A memorial has been established in Jim's honor and kindly suggested to the First Presbyterian Church of Holdrege, Feed My Starving Children or the donor's choice.
