Paul Oran Lavene, 99 years of age of Bertrand, Nebraska

Memorial Services for Paul O. Lavene will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hope Lutheran Church in rural Smithfield, Nebraska with Pastor Tim Glendening, officiating. Private family inurnment will be held in the Highland Cemetery at Bertrand, Nebraska.

Paul Oran Lavene, 99 years of age, of Bertrand, passed away on Tuesday, August 20, 2013, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege, Nebraska. Paul was born on February 2, 1914, in rural Gosper County, south of Bertrand, the fifth of ten children born to August Peter and Minnie Mae (Wahl) Lavene. He received his education from Fairfield School, south of Smithfield, in Gosper County, Nebraska.

Following his education, Paul engaged in a life-time career of farming.

On June 1, 1941, Paul was united in marriage to Dorothy Jane Bonser and to this union five children were born: Sharon, Darrel, Ronald, Kent, and Nancy. The family made their home on a farm north of Bertrand.

Paul enjoyed playing church league softball, golfing and bowling. He also enjoyed tending to his garden. Paul especially enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren's activities.

He was a member of the Hope Lutheran Church, Bertrand Village Board, Bertrand School Board and Bertrand Rural Fire Board.

Besides his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy in June of 2012; his three brothers: Albert Lavene and his wife, Elnora, Lloyd Lavene and his wife, June, and George Lavene, in infancy; five sisters: Ethel Forester and her husband, Ralph, Mabel Fastenau and her husband, Fred, Ruth Todd and her husband, Bill; Valva York and her husband, Donald, and Myrtle Lavene in infancy and one brother-in-law, Eugene Wilken.

He leaves to mourn his passing; his children: Sharon Kreutzer and her husband, Marlo of Funk, Nebraska, Darrel Lavene and his wife, Veronica of Bertrand, Ronald Lavene and his wife, Sharon of Fairfield, Nebraska, Kent Lavene and his spouse, Frank Ellis of Omaha, Nebraska, and Nancy Fowler and her husband, Richard of Bertrand; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one sister, Rose Wilken of Bertrand; sisters-in-law: Shirley Bonser of Bertrand, and Dixie Bonser of Springfield, Missouri; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, August 23, 2013 at the Sandstrom Funeral Home in Bertrand from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
