Ruth "Carol" Thompson, 96 years of age, of Holdrege, Nebraska

Funeral Services for Carol Thompson will be conducted from the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Monday, January 6, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Jeff Adams officiating. Interment will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege.

Ruth "Carol" Thompson, 96 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Monday, December 30, 2013 at the Holdrege Memorial Homes. Carol was born October 24, 1917 in Harlan County, near Huntley, Nebraska, the youngest of five children born to William Fredrick and Melissa Jane (Sellers) Skiles. She received her primary education from the Salem Grade School and then graduated from Huntley High School with the class of 1935. At an early age, Carol became a member of the Methodist faith and devoted her life to serving the Lord.

Following her education, Carol was employed as a sales clerk in Mr. Arnold's Department Store in Ragan, Nebraska. In 1942, she moved to Holdrege with her mother and sister, Mildred. Carol continued to work as a sales clerk as she began her employment for Mr. Niehaus in the Hested Store.

On February 5, 1946, Carol was united in marriage to Robert Lee Thompson, who returned home from serving three years in the Army. The couple then moved to Riverton, Nebraska. While in Riverton, Kenton was born on April 5, 1949. The family continued to reside in Riverton until returning to Holdrege, where Burton was born on January 14, 1958. On January 5, 1993, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bob. In 2003, she began to make her home at Holdrege Memorial Homes.

Carol was a member of the Methodist Church for over 75 years. She served in many capacities including: assisting with Vacation Bible School and was involved with Methodist Youth Fellowship. When the boys were young, she also volunteered with the Boy Scouts and Band Mothers. She was also active with Eastern Star for many years.

Besides her parents and husband, Carol was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Jace Ryan Jones; one brother, Harold Skiles; three sisters: Sylvia Miller and her husband, Verl, Mildred Mintzmyer and her husband, George, and Verona Allmand and her husband, Walter.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her two sons: Kenton Thompson and his wife, Marilyn and Burton Thompson and his wife, Stephanie all of Holdrege; five grandchildren: Kelsey Thompson, Toria Jones and her husband, Josh, Lacey Carter and her husband, Jake, Byron Thompson, and Laura Thompson; four great-grandchildren: Damien Jensen, Jeret Carter and Jaylee and Jaycee Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 5, 2014 from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.

A memorial has been established in Carol's honor and kindly suggested to the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege.
