Margaret Elaine David, 89 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at the Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege. She was born on April 1, 1924 on a farm six miles south of Holdrege, in Phelps County, Nebraska, the eldest of two children born to Harry O. and Inez (Johnston) Olson. The family made their home on two different farms in Phelps County, where Margaret attended rural schools until moving into Holdrege in 1930. She then received her education from Holdrege Public Schools, graduating from Holdrege High School with the class of 1941. Following graduation, Margaret had intentions to further her education at college in the fall but received an offer to work as an operator for the telephone office. She enjoyed this job so much she gave up her college aspirations. She worked as a telephone operator for two years before becoming the Chief Evening Operator. Margaret was then employed by the Holdrege Hospital as a secretary and admittance clerk and continued her employment at the newly built Phelps Memorial Hospital for 25 years.

On October 21, 1947, she was united in marriage to Gaylord David. Gaylord had just been discharged from an Army hospital due to gunshot wounds he received in the service at the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. He was paralyzed and a paraplegic for the remainder of his life and Margaret devoted her life to caring for Gaylord. The couple continued to reside in Holdrege throughout the years where they built three different homes. Gaylord preceded Margaret in death in November of 1999. In July of 2006 she began to make her home at the Christian Homes Care Community.

Margaret was an active baptized member of the First Baptist Church of Holdrege since March 26, 1959. She served as church Clerk, chairwoman of Circle, chair of the serving groups and also taught Sunday school.

Besides her husband, Gaylord she was preceded in death by her parents.

Margaret leaves to mourn her passing; her brother, Norris Olson and his wife, Jane of Kearney, Nebraska; in addition, Gaylord and Margaret had two "special kids" who adopted the couple as their "friends for life": Janet (Nelson) Blauvelt of Hastings, Nebraska and Susan (Pesek) Rowe and her husband, Tim of rural Lexington, Nebraska.
They loved them like their own children, along with their nieces and nephews: Cheryl Davis of Phoenix, Arizona, Grant Olson of Kearney, Carolyn Klassen and her husband, Marvin of Holdrege, K'Don Anderson and his wife, Betty of Kearney, Marlin Anderson and his wife, Phyllis of Des Moines, Iowa, and Gayleen Nestor and her husband, Wayne of Stromsburg, Nebraska; one great niece, Jayne Ortgiesen and her husband, Larry of Atlanta, Nebraska; one great nephew, Taylor Davis of Phoenix, Arizona; one great-great-nephew, J.D. Ortgiesen and his wife, Noelle of Atlanta; two great-great-great niece and nephew: Taya and Race Ortgiesen; and a host of other family and friends.
