Planned Waterways Funding Proposal Encouraging News

A new waterways funding proposal could come up in the lame duck session. Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander has announced plans to introduce the American Waterworks Act. He indicated that he - along with South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham and a bipartisan group of Senators - will pursue additional co-sponsors and consider an effort to add the bill to legislation expected in the lame duck session or the next Senate Water Resources Development Act bill. The full details of Alexander's proposal aren't available at this time - but among other things - he did say it includes provisions to authorize a five-year construction program to expand harbors to accommodate the larger ships expected after the Panama Canal expansion and provide full federal funding for maintenance of harbors up to 50-feet deep The American Soybean Association says initial descriptions of the American Waterworks Act are encouraging. The group strongly supports legislation to fund much needed upgrades to the aging waterways infrastructure.
