Don Eugene "Sonny" Ekberg, 54 years of age, of Grand Island, Nebraska
Memorial Services for Don E. "Sonny" Ekberg will be held on Friday, August 30, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska with Reverend Tim Glendening officiating. Private family inurnment will be held at the Moses Hill Cemetery in Phelps County, Nebraska.
Don Eugene "Sonny" Ekberg, 54 years of age, of Grand Island, Nebraska, passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at his sister's home in Bertrand, Nebraska. Sonny was born September 11, 1958 at Kearney, Nebraska, the fourth of five children of Donald E. and Gloria (Mattson) Ekberg. He received his education from Oxford, Nebraska, graduating from Oxford High School with the class of 1977.
He was united in marriage to Angie Frink on June 9, 1989 and to this union two children were born: Blake Don and Alexis Kay. Early in years the family made their home on a farm outside of Loomis, Nebraska. Sonny was employed by the Nebraska Department of Roads Â– Maintenance Department for over 25 years.
He was a member of the Hope Lutheran Church in rural Smithfield, Nebraska, where he was baptized on April 4, 1999. The past year and half he made his home in Grand Island, where he was involved as a volunteer with C.A.S.A. Sonny was also a member of Pheasants Forever, enjoyed fishing and hunting and was an excellent cook.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Gloria; grandparents: Otto and Julia Mattson and Frank and Veda Ekberg.
Sonny leaves to mourn his passing; his two children: Blake and Alexis Ekberg of Holdrege; father, Donald Ekberg; four sisters: Cheryl Langenberg and her husband, Don of Holdrege, Diane Regier and her husband, Kent of Brighton, Colorado, Lana Benson of Bertrand, and Lisa Johnson and her husband, Mike of Holdrege; niece, Tracy Helwick and her husband, Joe of Holdrege and nephew, Brett Langenberg of Chicago, Illinois; and a host of other relatives and friends.
There will be no visitation, the family is honoring Sonny's wish for cremation.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Sonny's honor and kindly suggested to the family.
