Severe weather outbreak possible today

Forecasters are monitoring a large portion of Nebraska and Iowa for a possible severe weather outbreak later today.

The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center said that severe thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and tonight for western through southern Iowa, north-central through eastern Nebraska, northern Missouri, west-central Illinois, and extreme south-central and southeast South Dakota.

Widespread damaging winds, some to hurricane force, a few intense tornadoes, and widespread large hail, some baseball size are expected in these areas.

Forecasters say that now is the time to review your severe weather safety procedures for the possibility of dangerous weather today. Stay tuned for watches and warnings. A watch means that conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms over the next several hours. If a warning is issued for your area, move to a place of safety, ideally in an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.
