Martin Herman Meyer, 91, of rural Smithfield, Nebraska
Funeral Services for Martin H. Meyer will be conducted from the Hope Lutheran Church in rural Smithfield, Nebraska on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Tim Glendening officiating. Interment will be in the Hope Lutheran Cemetery in rural Smithfield, Nebraska, with Military Honors conducted by the Bertrand Veteran's Organization in conjunction with the United States Army National Guard Honors Team.
Martin Herman Meyer, 91 years of age, of rural Smithfield, passed away on Friday, January 11, 2013 at the Bertrand Nursing Home. Martin was born March 15, 1921 at the family farm in Gosper County, Nebraska, the fourth of five children born to Herman A. and Mary M. (Schroeder) Meyer. Martin received his education through the 8th grade from the Tracyville, District #20 in rural Gosper County.
He was baptized on May 15, 1921 and confirmed in the Hope Lutheran Church on June 30, 1935. Martin was a lifelong member of the Hope Lutheran Church, serving on the church counsel.
Martin enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps on September 30, 1942. He was stationed at Foster Field in Texas, as an airplane mechanic. He was honorably discharged as a Sergeant on February 28, 1946.
Martin enjoyed playing softball, bowling, meeting friends on Sunday afternoons to eat and driving in the countryside. He also served on the CO-OP Board.
Martin was engaged in farming and ranching his whole life. He started farming with horses, had many favorite horses, and rode a horse to check cows into his late 80's. He was a pioneer of his time with the introduction of ridge-till farming. Farming and cattle was his job, hobby and life. Martin received the Ak-Sar-Ben 100 Year Pioneer Farm Award. He enjoyed his livestock, including his cow/calf operation, horses and hogs. Martin was a mentor to Todd Mumm, who worked and farmed alongside Martin for 30 years. Martin was active in the day-to-day activities until his death.
Martin was born, raised and lived in the same house his entire life.
Martin was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Olga Meyer; brothers: Adelbert Meyer and wife, Susie and Walter Meyer; and brother-in-law, Harold Stehl.
He leaves to mourn his passing, sister Esther Stehl of Bertrand; sister-in-law, Mildred Meyer of Bertrand; nieces: Gloria Nelson of Bertrand, Karen Samuleson and her husband, Darryl of Loomis, Faye Anderson and her husband, Dean of Holdrege, Nebraska, Marlys Sinsel and her husband, Arden of Minden, Nebraska, Patty Eastep of Utah, Trudy Witt and her husband, Steve of Bertrand, and Wanda Meyer-Price and her husband, Bernie of Virginia; nephews: Ralph Stehl and his wife, Barb of Bertrand, Terry Meyer and his wife, Lynda of Bertrand, and Wendell Meyer of Central City, Nebraska; special friends, Todd and Cindy Mumm and their family, Andrea, Dustin, Whitney and Dillon Mumm of Bertrand; along with great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at the Sandstrom Funeral Home in Bertrand from 1:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established and can be made to the family.
