Chadron voters extend local sales tax

Chadron residents Tuesday overwhelmingly approved a new 15-year half-cent LB-840 economic development sales tax and accompanying plan setting how the money will be used.

There were separate ballot items for the tax and the plan, with both needing to pass, and both received well over 80% support. .

While officially a new tax, it's essentially a 15-year continuation of an identical tax approved by Chadron voters 10 years ago, only with a new purpose. The primary project to be fundedis a rebuild and expansion of the Chadron storm sewer system...which will lead to a major repaving and upgrade of Highway 385...3rd Street through Chadron...by the state.

City Manager Wayne Anderson took the lead role in voter education and public awareness of the LB-840 tax and plan, and is understandably pleased with the overwhelming support they received from the voters.

There was a 23% voter turnout, almost identical to the turnout in Dawes County as a whole at last year's primary.
