Celebration of Life Services for Jean (Furse) Birt will be held at the First Baptist Church in Oxford, Nebraska on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Dallas Johnson and Pastor Linda
Knipping-Potts officiating. Private family inurnment will take place prior to services at the Oxford Cemetery at Oxford.
Jean (Furse) Birt, 87 years of age, of Oxford passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at the Mt. Carmel-Keens Memorial Home in Kearney, Nebraska. She was born May 3, 1925 in Alma, Nebraska, the eldest of two children born to H.G. (Gay) and Elsie (Foltz) Furse. Jean received her primary education in the Alma Public Schools and graduated from Palisade High School in 1942. Following her education, Jean was the owner of Furse Cleaners in Oxford for a number of years.
Jean was united in marriage to Donald Jean "Tom" Sailors and to this union, three children were born: Thomas Michael, Gerald Stephen and Kathryn Gaye. Tom passed away in 1954, due to an automobile accident.
On June 22, 1958, Jean was united in marriage to Dean Birt at the Christian Church in Alma and to this union one daughter was born, Kelli Ann. The Birt's made their home in Oxford, where Jean was the Director of Pleasant Heights. She then was employed by the City of Oxford as the secretary and clerk for the city. Following her employment with the city, the Birt's were the owners and operators of the Oxford Café.
Jean enjoyed reading and attending her Bible studies and Wednesday Club, but most importantly loved watching her grandchildren's activities and spending time with her family. She was a devoted member in the First Baptist Church in Oxford for over 55 years.
Besides her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her first husband, Tom; brother-in-law, Duane Birt and his wife, Lois; two sisters-in-law: Faye Stevens and her husband, Hal and Mildred (Billie) Garrison and her husband, Art.
Jean leaves to mourn her passing her loving husband of almost 55 years, Dean; two sons: Tom Birt and his wife, Teresa of Santa Monica, California, Grady "Jerry" Birt and his wife, Carolyn of Burbank, California; two daughters: Gaye McCallum and her husband, Doug of Eagle, Nebraska, Kelli Urbanek and her husband, Tom of Kearney, Nebraska; seven grandchildren: Nick Birt, Lindsay Tallman, Adam Pleas, Caitlin Pleas, Micah Urbanek, McKenna Urbanek and Noah Urbanek; seven great-grandchildren: Hadley Pleas, Madison Tallman, Emma Tallman, Coleton Tallman, Delaney Tallman, Alex Birt and Bailey Birt; one brother, Bob Furse and his wife, Marilyn of Phoenix, Arizona; and a host of nephews, nieces, other family members and friends.
Memorial book signing will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, from 5:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. with the family hosting fellowship from 6:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. at the Mitchell-Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home at Oxford.
A memorial will be established in Jean's honor and will be designated at a later date.
