Walter G. Goos, 82 years of age, of Holdrege, Nebraska
Memorial Graveside Services for Walter G. Goos will be conducted from the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege, Nebraska on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Dale Lambert officiating.
Inurnment will be in the Prairie Home Cemetery with military honors provided by the Martin-Horn American Legion Post #66 in conjunction with the United States Army National Guards Military Honors Team.
Walter G. Goos, 82 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Holdrege Memorial Homes. Walter was born January 20, 1931 in rural Nemaha County, Nebraska, near Auburn, the youngest of ten children born to William and Caroline (Beckmann) Goos. He received his education from a rural school in Nemaha County.
Following his education, Walter served his country in the National Guards for over ten years. He was united in marriage to Mary Dawdy and to this union three children were born: James, Gary and Selinda.
Walter was first employed as a mechanic in Auburn, Nebraska in 1947 at the Ford Motor Company until 1958 when he moved to Alma, Nebraska. While in Alma, he was employed at Paul Blum Chrysler Motor Company for brief time, until he became the Service Manager for the Charles Gabus Ford/Mercury Motor Company in Holdrege for over 30 years. In 1981, Walter was preceded in death by his wife, Mary. On July 7, 1982 he was united in marriage to Joy Beckman at the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege and the couple continued to make their home in Holdrege. Walter retired from the Ford Garage in 1987. He also owned and operated the Zephyr CafĂ© from 1984 until 1994.
Walter enjoyed traveling with Joy, wood working, hunting, gardening, fishing and loved to go to the horse races. He will be remembered by all who know him by his keen sense of humor and joke telling.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege, a past president of the Eagles Club, and past member of the Elks Lodge. He was also a past president of the Platte Valley Parts & Service Club.
Besides his parents, and first wife, Mary, Walter was preceded in death by his daughter, Selinda Goos in infancy; 4 brothers: Wilber, Herbert, Art, Theodore, and Fred Goos; 1 sister, Josphine Schmiegelo; 4 brothers-in-law: Wilbert Heidzig, Clarence Schmiegelo, Cliff Hantak, and Melvin Kuhlmann; 3 sisters-in-law: Edna, Carol and Lucille Goos.
He leaves to mourn his passing; his wife, Joy of Holdrege; 2 sons: James L. Goos and his wife, Liz of Yulee, Florida, Gary Goos of Sargent, Nebraska; 20 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 3 sisters: Olga "Gay" Hantak of Garfield Heights, Ohio, Adaline "Ad" Kuhlmann of McCook, Nebraska, Bernita "Bee" Heidzig of Auburn, Nebraska; 2 sisters-in-law: Shirley Johnson and her husband, Dick of Holdrege, Donna Vandament and her husband, Jim of Pryor, Oklahoma; 3 brothers-in-law: Lester Trollope and his wife, Linda of Holdrege, Larry Trollope of Sturgis, South Dakota, Lynn Trollope and his wife, Tracy of Sturgis; 4 step-children: Kathy Peterson and her husband, Kenny, Sandra Tilson and her husband, Tillie, Janet Anderson all of Holdrege, and Dan Beckman and his wife, Skye of Minden, Nebraska; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation for memorial book signing will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege from 5:00 p.m. Â– 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. Â– 7:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established in Walter's honor and will be designated at a later date.
