E. Irene Griffith, 91 years of age, of Bertrand, Nebraska
A Service of Celebration and Praise for the life of Irene Griffith will be conducted from the Evangelical Free Church in Loomis, Nebraska on Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Tom Thompson officiating. Interment will be held at Highland Cemetery at Bertrand, Nebraska following the service.
E. Irene Griffith, 91 years of age, of Bertrand, passed away on Saturday, July 20, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska. Irene was born on April 24, 1922 in Gosper County, Nebraska, the 6th of 8 children born to John F. and Mabel H. (Sandin) Paulsen. She received her primary education from District #25 rural school in Gosper County and attended high school in Oxford, Nebraska for three years prior to graduating from Mascot High School at Mascot, Nebraska with the class of 1938. Following her education, Irene was employed at the Brewster Hospital in Holdrege and the J.C. Penny's stores in Columbus, Nebraska and also Holdrege.
On March 5, 1947 Irene was united in marriage to Claude D. Griffith at Holdrege and to this union one son, David was born. Irene spent her married life tending to the home, raising their son, David and assisted side-by-side with Claude on the farm southwest of Bertrand. She enjoyed gardening, reading, embroidery, and most of all spending time with family and friends.
In her later years, Irene volunteered with various community groups including: the Bertrand Nursing Home, Blood Mobile, and was active with the Bertrand Fair and Rodeo for many years. She was an active member of the Evangelical Free Church in Loomis, where she was involved with Free Church Women's Ministries and White Cross.
Her husband, Claude preceded her in death on October 13, 1990. Irene was fortunate enough to live the remainder of her life at home in Bertrand. Besides her husband and parents, Irene is preceded in death by three brothers: Albert Paulson and his wife, Alberta, Herbert Paulson and his wife, Helen, and Roy Paulson and his wife, Myrtle; two sisters: Louise Paulsen and Myrtle Clayton and her husband, Tom; two sisters-in-law: Grace Vinzant and her husband, Gaillan and Edna Paulsen; and two brothers-in-law: Densmore Nelson and Spencer Griffith.
She leaves to mourn her passing; her son, David Griffith and his wife, Cheryl; one granddaughter, Alison Griffith all of Lincoln; one brother, John Paulsen of Holdrege; one sister, Ruth Nelson of Holdrege; sister-in-law, Betty Meyer and her husband, Darrel of Bertrand; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at the Sandstrom Funeral Home in Bertrand from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
A memorial has been established in Irene's honor and kindly suggested to Loomis Evangelical Free Church or The Gideons International.
