Mervin was born November 25, 1931 on the family farm northeast of Smithfield in Gosper County, Nebraska, the third of four children born to Frank and Bertha (Holthus) Fastenau. He received his primary education from District #64 in Gosper County, and then attended his freshman year at Smithfield before graduating from Bertrand High School with the class of 1949. Following his education, Cork was employed in Lincoln, Nebraska for Strauss Brothers Construction.

On December 30, 1951 he was united in marriage to Lola Anderson from Bertrand. The couple made their home in Lincoln, where their first child, Debra, was born in 1952. They returned to Bertrand, where they engaged in farming and resided in town until his parents retired and then moved onto the home place northwest of Bertrand. Then their son, Van was born in 1958. Cork's life was centered on his family and farming was his passion. He continued to farm and raise cattle for over 40 years. In 1993, the couple moved into Bertrand. For the past six months, Cork made his home at the Bertrand Nursing Home due to his failing health.

He was a member of the Hope Lutheran Church, where he was active on the church council and served as an usher. Cork loved the time spent with his grandchildren, and teasing them was always on his mind.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Alice Fastenau; and one brother, Francis Fastenau. Cork is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lola of Bertrand; daughter, Debra Hale and her husband, Randy of Sandy, Utah; son, Van Fastenau and his wife, Penny of Smithfield; four grandchildren: Nicholas Hale and his wife, Lauren, Adam Hale and his wife, Krista, Amber Bailey and her husband, Kirby, and Abby Fastenau; five great-grandchildren: Jackson, Ashlyn, Kolton, Nash, and Knox; one sister, Ardell Charleston and her husband, Richard of Mesquite, Nevada; one brother-in-law, Leland Anderson of Bertrand; and a host of other relatives and friends.
