USDA’s FSIS Increasing Testing

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced last week if will conduct species sampling and testing on imported raw ground-beef and veal also checked for Shiga-toxin-producing E. coli to confirm shipments don't contain horse meat. This decision was made after the horse meat scandal that started in mid-January once products from burgers to lasagna were mislabeled in Europe. FSIS does not allow imports of horse meat from other countries to the U.S. for human consumption. FSIS Spokeswoman Cathy Cochran says FSIS is confident the inspection system at ports of entry ensures the safety of products that come into this country. Still - Cochran says FSIS is increasing testing to enhance current safeguards and prevent fraudulently labeled products from entering the U.S.
