Esther Louise Marjorie (Meyer) Stehl, 99 years of age, of Bertrand, Nebraska

Funeral Services for Esther L. Stehl will be conducted from the Hope Lutheran Church in rural Smithfield, Nebraska on ­­­­Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Tim Glendening officiating. Interment will be in the Hope Lutheran Cemetery in rural Gosper County, Nebraska.

Esther Louise Marjorie (Meyer) Stehl, 99 years of age, of Bertrand, Nebraska, passed away on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at the Bertrand Nursing Home - Assisted Living. Esther was born December 3, 1913 on a farm in Phillips County, Kansas near Phillipsburg, the eldest of five children born to Herman A. and Mary M. (Schroeder) Meyer. She was baptized on December 17, 1913 in Kansas at the German Lutheran Church. The family moved to the Smithfield area in 1919, when Esther was six years of age. Esther received her education from the Tracyville School District #20 in rural Gosper County through the 8th grade. Esther stayed at home and did domestic housework and child care for the neighborhood and church families.

Esther was united in marriage to Harold Stehl on February 19, 1936 at the Hope Lutheran Church by Esther's uncle, Pastor Streetz. The couple engaged in farming southwest of Bertrand for a year. Later moving southeast of Bertrand for seven years, where they continued farming. To this union three children were born: Gloria Gaye, Karen Kaye and Ralph Harold. In 1944, the family moved two miles west of Loomis, where Esther was a devoted wife and mother and helped with all the chores and farming. With the children grown and gone they moved to Bertrand in 1965. On June 25, 1973 she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold.

Esther was very active in her church and community with volunteer work. She served Bethphage Mission in Axtell, made many quilts for the nursing home to sell and pieced many, many quilts for church distribution. She also enjoyed quilting for the Senior Center. Esther also loved following her grandchildren and great-grandchildren's school activities, even attending some state competitions in wrestling. Esther was a great "clipper" and picture collector for the family.

Besides her husband, Harold, Esther was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Darwyn Samuelson; son-in-law, Lowell Nelson; grandson-in-law, Bill Elliott; sister, Olga Meyer; and brothers: Adelbert Meyer and wife, Susie, Walter Meyer and Martin Meyer.

She leaves to mourn her passing, daughters: Gloria Nelson of Bertrand, Karen Samuelson and her husband, Darryl of Loomis; son, Ralph Stehl and his wife, Barb of Bertrand; sister-in-law, Mildred Meyer of Bertrand; 10 grandchildren: Melodee Nelson of Aurora, CO, Monica Nedler and her husband, Michael of Denver, CO, Merry Rybolt of Aurora, CO, Blake Nelson and his wife, Andrea of Littleton, CO, Darren Samuelson and his wife, Marlynn of Bertrand, Denise Laird and her husband, Steve of Funk, Nebraska, DeAnna Bartruff of Loomis, Darla Knoble and her husband, Gary of Funk, Brenda Johnson and her husband, Jerry of Bertrand, and Bretta Lund and her husband, Scott of Bertrand; 21 great-grandchildren; 3 great great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 8, 2013 at the Sandstrom Funeral Home in Bertrand from 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

A memorial has been established in Esther's honor and will be designated at a later date.
