Troopers honored for actions in Alliance standoff

Three Nebraska State Patrol troopers from Troop E in Scottsbluff who were the first responders or participated in the more than 14 hour standoff in Alliance earlier this summer were honored during a ceremony Monday at State Fair in Grand island.

During the June 12th standoff at Thiele's Paharmacy Trooper Timothy Flick along with two Alliance Police Officers were injured by gunfire from the armed suspect Andy Gonzales. Flick suffered gunshot wounds to the left side of his body. Flick received the Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) "First Responder Citation."

Alliance Police Officers Kirk Felker, 43, and Matt Shannon, 35, were also honored. Felker and Shannon were also wounded by gunfire during the standoff.

Also given the First Responder Citation during the ceremony was trooper Jeffrey Van Stelton who survived a fiery crash with an unlicensed driver in Hitchcock County.
