Region 23 Complex fire turned over to local agencies
The Region 23 Complex Fire in Dawes County was determined to be 100% contained on Saturday, September 8th, and command of the fire was transferred from the Tpe III Incident Command Team to local fire departments at 6 p.m. Monday night. A National Infrared Operations airplane scanned and mapped the entire fire area Saturday evening to identify remaining hot spots that crews then investigated and mopped up while completing fireline rehabilitation.
The Region 23 Complex Fire burned 86,201 acres that includes the Douthit fire of 29,730 acres northwest of Crawford, and the West Ash Fire of 56,471 acres southwest of Chadron. Both were started by lightning on August 28.
As of Monday, several resources have been released to travel to other fires, but several will remain to provide additional workforce supporting initial attack and rehabilitation.
