Frasier and Dundy County receive award
Elaine Frasier and Dundy County Citizens received the 2013 Local Hero Award for showing outstanding volunteerism and community preparedness during the 2011 Amtrak derailment near Benkelman.
The accident included 300 victims. School buses and drivers were on scene shortly after first responders to transport train passengers. Local farmers assisted by hauling luggage with ATVs and pickups. Classrooms emptied to assist victims into the school gym, which was used as a temporary shelter.
It was estimated that about 500 volunteers and 5,000 volunteer hours were spent responding to the emergency.
