Ellen Kerr, 97 years of age, of Billings, Montana, (formerly of Alma)
Funeral Services for Ellen Kerr will be held at the United Methodist Church in Alma, Nebraska on Friday, May 2, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. with Reverend Jim Bendorf officiating. Interment will be held in the Alma Cemetery.
Ellen Kerr, 97 years of age, of Billings, Montana, (formerly of Alma) passed away Friday, April 25, 2014 in Billings at the St. Vincent Health Care. Ellen was born September 22, 1916, on a farm northwest of Alma in Harlan County, the eldest of four children born to Lovell and Mable (Coe) Walker. She was baptized and became a member of the United Methodist Church in Alma, where she was an active member. Ellen was also involved with the United Methodist Women's organization at the church.
She grew to adulthood on the family farm between Alma and Orleans and attended Midway Rural School District #76, through the 8th grade. Ellen attended high school in Alma, where she graduated with the class of 1933. She took normal training in high school to prepare her to become a teacher and attended Kearney State College. She taught school several years in Harlan County District #6, District #59 and Midway #76.
On February 24, 1939 she was united in marriage to Clair W. Kerr at her family home. To this union two children were born: Donna June and Eugene Robert.
They made their first home on a farm south of Huntley, NE, later moving to a farm north of Orleans in 1944. In 1975 they moved to Alma. On March 20, 1994, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clair. In 1999, Ellen bid goodbye to her Alma home and friends and moved to Billings to be near her daughter and son-in-law. She resided at Aspen View Retirement Home for 12 years and was living at Aspen Meadows Nursing Home at the time of her death. She looked forward to visits from family members and friends whenever possible and always insisted they join her in dining in Aspen View's dining room, where she took pride in introducing them to her Aspen View friends.
Besides her husband, Clair and her parents; Ellen was preceded in death by her brothers: Lawrence Walker, and Dr. Hiram Walker and sisters-in-law: Ella Marie Walker and Vada Walker.
Her survivors include her children: daughter, Donna Meier and her husband, Selby of Billings and son, Eugene Robert Kerr and his wife, Joan of Ankeny, Iowa; granddaughters: Julie Sander and Lindsey Kerr; grandson, Adam Kerr and his wife, Karalee; great-granddaughters: Megan and Jayma Schell and Mya Ellen Kerr; brother, Dr. Oscar C. Walker, D.V.M. of Holmes Beach, FL, sister-in-law, Lucille "Sue" Walker of Ft. Collins, Colorado; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 1, 2014 from 4:00 p.m. Â 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. Â 7:30 p.m. at the Bauer-Torrey & Mach Funeral Home in Alma.
A memorial has been established in Ellen's honor and will be designated at a later date.
