Jay Ehler named Sidney superintendent
Sidney High School Principal Jay Ehler has agreed Wednesday to a two year contract to be the new superintendent at Sidney Public Schools. Ehler will assume the position in July after John Hakonson steps down.
Ehler had been offered the position earlier in the week and had until Thursday noon to decide whether to accept it. Ehler says his familiarity with his peers and the board helped persuade him to say yes.
Ehler has been principal at Sidney high for six years and Board President Tom Von Seggern said his hiring will bring stability and established relationships that will enhance communication with the staff and the public.
Ehler was a social sciences teacher and boys basketball coach at Gering prior to taking the principal's position in Sidney. While principal at Sidney he has also served as the boys basketball coach. It's not known at this time whether he will continue serving in that capacity while being superintendent.
Ehler was one of four candidates for the position.
