Celebration of Life Services for Marlene F. Powell will be held on Friday, October 13, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege, Nebraska with Pastor Nora Mendyk officiating. Following the services, interment will be held at the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege.
Marlene Fae Powell, 74 years of age, Holdrege, passed away on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at the Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege. She was born October 7, 1943, at Palmer, Nebraska, the second of three children born to Arden and Virginia (Carson) Hathaway. She received her education from Palmer Public Schools, graduating from Palmer High School, with the class of 1961.
On May 20, 1961, she was united in marriage to Roger L. Powell at Columbus, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Holdrege, where they raised their three children: David, Diane and Darla. Marlene devoted her life to caring for her family’s needs. Once the children started school, she was employed as the secretary for the Phelps County Weed Control Department for twenty years, and then worked as a para-educator in the Holdrege Public School System for almost 10 years, prior to her retirement.
Marlene was a dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege. She was very active in the United Methodist Women, was a past treasurer of the UMW society, and cherished all of the friendships she made during church circles, and coffee club. She loved going to garage sales, and always enjoyed a good word search puzzle. Marlene’s grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were the highlight of her life, and she enjoyed attending all of their activities.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death her grandson, Trevor Powell; brother, James Hathaway and his wife, Polly; brother-in-law, Larry Pavlik; and sister-in-law, Myrna Powell.
She leaves to celebrate her life; her husband of 56 years, Roger Powell of Holdrege; her three children: David Powell and his wife, Cindy of Holdrege; Diane Jackson of Kearney, Nebraska; and Darla Heeren and her husband, Brian of Grand Island, Nebraska; 8 grandchildren: Tyler Powell; Tony Powell and his wife, Kristin; Katie Alvarado and her husband, Aaron; Emily Jackson and her fiancé, Darren Emal; Maggie Jackson; Nathan Heeren; Samantha Jackson; and Andrea Jackson; 7 great-grandchildren: Keegan, Waylon, Johnnielynn, Payton, Jordyn, Mason, and Carter Powell; Marlene’s younger twin sister, Margene Pavlik of St. Paul, Nebraska; two brothers-in-law: Jim Powell and his wife, Elaine of Grand Island, and Thomas Powell and his wife, Linda of St. Paul; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday, October 12, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege.
A memorial has been established in Marlene’s honor, and kindly suggested to the First United Methodist Church.
