Celebration of Life Services for Roger L. Powell will be held on Monday, June 11, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege, Nebraska with Pastor Nora Mendyk officiating. Interment will be held at the Prairie Home Cemetery at Holdrege following services.
Roger Lee Powell, 77 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at the Christian Homes Care Community in Holdrege. He was born December 8, 1940, in Grand Island, Nebraska, the eldest of four children born to Delmar Claude and Ruth Nadine (Stonebarger) Powell. He received his education from St. Paul Public Schools in St. Paul, Nebraska, graduating from St. Paul High School with the class of 1959. Roger then pursued higher education at Kearney State College.
On May 20, 1961, he was united in marriage to Marlene F. Hathaway in Columbus, Nebraska. The couple made their home in Holdrege, where they raised their three children: David, Diane and Darla. Roger was employed by Beale’s Ok Tire when they first moved to Holdrege. In 1979, he began a long career with Becton Dickinson as a molding technician, until his retirement in December of 2002. In 2015, the couple began to make their home at Christian Homes Care Community, and on October 10, 2017, Marlene preceded him in death.
Roger was a dedicated member of the First United Methodist Church in Holdrege. He loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping with his family. But most of all, Roger loved attending all of his grandchildren’s activities and spending time with his great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents and wife; he was preceded in death his grandson, Trevor Powell; sister, Claudia Powell in infancy; brothers-in-law: James Hathaway and his wife, Polly, and Larry Pavlik; and sister-in-law, Myrna Powell.
Roger leaves to celebrate his life; his three children: David Powell and his wife, Cindy of Holdrege; Diane Jackson of Kearney, Nebraska; and Darla Heeren and her husband, Brian of Grand Island; 8 grandchildren: Tyler Powell; Tony Powell and his wife, Kristin; Katie Alvarado and her husband, Aaron; Emily Emal and her husband, Darren; Maggie Jackson; Nathan Heeren; Samantha Jackson; and Andrea Jackson; 7 great-grandchildren: Keegan, Waylon, Johnnielynn, Payton, Jordyn, Mason, and Carter Powell; two brothers: Thomas Powell and his wife Linda of St. Paul, and James Powell and his wife, Elaine of Grand Island; sister-in-law, Margene Pavlik of St. Paul; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 10, 2018 from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
A memorial has been established in Rogers’s honor, and kindly suggested to the First United Methodist Church of Holdrege.
