Sherman Bryant Sweeley, 77 years of age, of Oxford, formerly of Holbrook and Holdrege

Mass of Christian Burial for Sherman B. Sweeley will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at All Saints Catholic Church in Holdrege, Nebraska with Father Thomas Lux serving as Celebrant.  A Rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. prior to the Mass.  Interment will be held at 2:00 p.m. at the Norton Cemetery at Norton, Kansas.

Sherman Bryant Sweeley, 77 years of age, of Oxford, Nebraska, formerly of Holbrook, Nebraska and Holdrege, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege.  Sherman was born August 16, 1940, in Norton, the eldest of four to George and Bernice (Bryant) Sweeley and grew up in a rock house on Prairie Dog River, east of the dam, until he was 2 years old.  His family moved to Nebraska and he attended country school, walking or riding a horse until he was 10 years old.  In the 1950’s, Sherman’s family moved to a farm near Elwood, Nebraska, where he attended school, played football and later graduated with the Elwood High School class of 1960.  Following graduation, Sherman hauled hay and worked for different neighbors, as a farm hand, near Eustis, Nebraska and Bertrand, Nebraska.

On April 20, 1968, Sherman was united in marriage to Laura Lea Wetter and to this union three children were born:  George, Sherwin and Lauretta.  The family made their home in Holdrege where Sherman assisted in building the Loomis Elevator and later worked for W.F. Anderson Plumbing and Heating for 20 years.  As a couple, he and Laura, managed the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #3132 in Holdrege.  He then worked for Paulson’s Inc., in Cozad, Nebraska and later, Ventures Corporation in Great Bend, Kansas, until his health began to fail.

Sherman and Laura loved to collect anything connected to Bald Eagles and camping as a family.  Sherman also enjoyed fishing, hunting with his sons and grandsons, jumping on the four wheeler and taking it around town and down to the park and spending time with family.

Sherman was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #3132.

Sherman was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law:  George and Zeta Wetter; wife, Laura on June 6, 2017; brother, Clarence “Tex” Sweeley, and sister-in-law, Lynn Wetter.

Sherman leaves to celebrate his life; his children:  George Sweeley and his wife, Shawna of Cawker City, Kansas, Sherwin Sweeley and his wife, Betty of Oxford and Lauretta Stonerook and her special friend, Sonnie Gipe of Holbrook; six grandchildren:  Sandy Meade and her husband, Bob, Casey Higgins and her husband, Mathew, Jesse Sweeley and his wife, Brianna, Preston Stonerook, Sherman Stonerook and Samuel Sweeley; two great-grandchildren:  Kikiana Meade and Wyatt Higgins; two sisters:  Judy Breining and her husband, Richard of Arapahoe, Nebraska and Ila Schutz and her husband, Wayne of Cambridge, Nebraska; sisters-in-law, Linda Sweeley of Texas and Caron Wetter of Colorado; brothers-in-law, Roger Wetter of Norton, Edwin Wetter and his wife, Teri of Oxford and Jerry Johnson of Holdrege; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

A memorial has been established in Sherman’s honor and kindly suggested to the family for later designation.
