The National Association of Conservation Districts, in partnership with USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, has awarded $1 million in grants to 19 conservation districts in 14 states to boost technical assistance capacity for urban agriculture and conservation projects.
“Our work as conservationists has evolved since the Dust Bowl, when many of our nation’s 3,000 conservation districts were first established,” NACD President Brent Van Dyke told an audience of conservation leaders in Altoona, Iowa, on Sunday. “In the 1930s, 44 percent of Americans lived in rural areas. Today, 86 percent of Americans live in urban areas, which cover just 28 percent of the nation’s land area.”
“The landscapes our customers own and manage have changed, but so has our approach to serving them,” Van Dyke continued. “Almost 70 percent of conservation districts are now involved in some form of urban and community conservation work. As a delivery system, and as a conservation family, we’ve risen to the challenge of providing world-class technical support whenever – and wherever – it is needed.”
NACD established the Urban Agriculture Conservation Grants Initiative in 2016 to help conservation districts and their partners provide much needed technical assistance for agricultural conservation in urban areas with limited access to fresh and healthy foods. Since then, NACD has awarded a total of $3 million in grants to 61 conservation districts in 30 states through this initiative.
The projects funded in the 2017 funding cycle will help urban farmers, community gardens, other local agricultural partnerships implement conservation practices that support local food production, provide opportunities for education and stewardship, and protect natural resources.
The 19 urban conservation projects selected for the 2017 funding cycle were, by state: Sebastian County CD, Arkansas; Inland Empire RCD, California; New Castle CD, Delaware; Fulton County SWCD, Georgia; Johnson County SWCD, Iowa; Douglas County CD, Kansas; Prince George’s SCD, Maryland; Genesee CD, Michigan; Upper Big Blue NRD, Nebraska; Nevada Tahoe CD, Nevada; Ocean County SCD, New Jersey; Ciudad SWCD, New Mexico; San Juan SWCD, New Mexico; Colonial SWCD, Virginia; Lord Fairfax SWCD, Virginia; Cascadia CD, Washington; Grant CD, Washington; Kitsap CD, Washington; Snohomish CD, Washington
