After a successful Inaugural year, Scotts Bluff Celtic Gathering will host its second event May 26-27, 2018 at Five Rocks in Gering.
A cultural festival highlighting the ancestral and modern cultures of the Celtic Nations—Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany and The Ilse of Man–the gathering will feature Arts and Crafts, live music, dance, and Celtic athletics. Returning this year are the Colorado Renaissance Scots reenactors. The RenScots will be setting up a period pavilion and demonstrating traditional Scottish skills, from blacksmithing to weaving to combat skills.
Also featured at the Gathering will be representatives from many Celtic Clans and Tribes, From Buchannans to MacKays, and including our Sponsor Clan McLeod. Also coming up will be representatives from the St David’s Society of Nebraska, the statewide Welsh heritage society. They will be serving “te bach” or “little tea” at select times throughout the gathering.
A new feature this year will be Celtic Athletics. On Saturday, there will be an interactive Highland Games exhibition, where experienced Highland athletes will instruct participants in the various Heavy Games, such as light and heavy weight for distance, Sheaf Toss, Scottish Hammer Throw and others. On Sunday, the Athletic field will host an ongoing Cricket demonstration.
Returning musicians this year are “the commoners”, the Fort Collins based celtic trad and rock group guaranteed to keep your toes tapping. Joining them will me Matthew Gurnsey, “The Kilted Man,” a multi-instrumental traditional musician. Saturday night will be closed out with a performance of those Husker-loving Celtic-Punk rockers, Lincoln’s own “The Killigans”!
