Kimball’s mayor says it was disheartening to hear the city’s Shopko Hometown store will close.
Keith Prunty says he was out of town when the news broke that the Kimball store is among 39 across the country that will be liquidating and shutting their doors by the end of next February.
Prunty tells KNEB News the closure is likely to have a negative impact for the community. “Every job is important for a small community, and we hate to lose even one,” says Prunty. “Hopefully, we’ll work with Shopko and maybe find another company willing to move in here. It’s also a hit for our sales tax revenue, which is never good for communities that depend on that.”
The city’s economic development team of the mayor, city administrator, economic development director and other members of city leadership are scheduled to meet Monday for a brain-storming session to come up with ideas on how to reduce the impact of the Shopko closure.
