Hear interview with Lexington Rescue Chief Doug Glaze

The Overton Volunteer Fire Department assisted Lexington Volunteer Fire Department in fighting a fire inside the Darling International livestock rendering facility Sunday afternoon in Lexington. Lexington Rescue Chief Doug Glaze said the fire started in a cooker/burner that burns beef tallow in the plant…but, it followed the vent line from that tank to some other areas of the plant as well.

Glaze said fighting a fire in such a facility presents a lot of challenges, ” just the nature of their business makes it a rather messy environment. The way the building is set-up, we had to enter and travel quite a long distance through the building to get to where the fire was. So really the environment plus the distance they(firefighters) had to travel.”

Glaze described the damage as significant. He praised the firefighters from both departments along with the assistance of State Fire Marshall’s Office and Don Price.

The fire call came in shortly before 1:00pm Sunday and the last of the fire equipment left the scene around 6:30pm.
